ORAL HEALTH EDUCATION STARTS EARLY

Oral health education should start at the earliest age. Children’s baby teeth begin erupting in 6-12 months until age three, so it is important to teach them basic brushing and flossing. They should see Dr. Jesmine as the doctor who helps them avoid pain in the mouth. As they get older, you and she can explain that constantly eating or drinking sweets without brushing right away will cause the teeth and gums to become infected by the sticky bacterial film called plaque. Make it fun for the whole family to brush and floss at the beginning and end of each day.

You can also help everyone keep their mouths healthy by serving meals that emphasize healthy fats, proteins, and complex carbohydrates like whole grains, seeds, nuts, beans, and peas. Simple carbs like white sugar and white flour quickly turn into an acid that eats away tooth enamel and attracts oral bacteria which infect the gums. Eventually, this can result in teeth becoming loose and either falling out or needing to be extracted (the ultimate mouth ouch!).

To take personal efforts at keeping teeth and gums healthy to another preventive level, every member of the family should have our dental hygienist do a professional cleaning twice a year (serious problems can develop in just six months). Likewise, Dr. Jesmine should conduct a full dental exam for each person twice a year, far beyond what the hygienist can address. In some cases, a digital x-ray will be needed to make sure there are not hidden cavities or an infection in the jawbone.

EARLY CARE IS VALUABLE

If members of your family are having trouble keeping their teeth and gums healthy, it’s time for a full exam and update and what they need to do to improve, such as adding an electric toothbrush, a water flosser, a small bristle brushing for tight places, or a dental-level mouthwash.
